Let's start with the understanding that many things called depression are not, and of the things that are, there are different extremes. For the majority of sufferers, many natural remedies can eliminate or help control depression. While professional advice is always a good idea, it makes sense to do everything we personally can to aid in the treatment. This article will discuss common causes and extremes of depression, along with natural solutions and remedies for the symptoms. Causes And Extremes Of Depression: Genuine depression is more than a mood. It's a mental illness brought on by a physical cause, a psychological cause, or both. Major depression is an extreme condition where there is no interest in activities of daily life, like eating, personal hygiene...even getting out of bed, and may be accompanied by attempts at suicide. When it's that extreme, psychiatric care and medication are almost always required. Chances are, someone suffering from major depression would not be interested in reading this article or taking any actions to recover. So this article is written for and to those less extreme cases, where you know something is wrong and want to find some things you can do to aid in recovery. Eliminate Chemical Addictions: It's common for depressed people to become addicted to alcohol and other substances to "self-medicate" their condition. The sad part is, while substances may temporarily mask or relieve the symptoms, they often deepen the depression. In fact, the addiction may actually be the cause of your illness, by throwing blood chemicals out of balance or by the self-loathing part of the addiction cycle. If there are drugs or alcohol involved in your life, they must be eliminated in order to discover or eliminate the cause of your mental illness. Natural Dietary Remedies: Poor diet, just like abuse of other substances, can be a physical cause of depression. A great way to begin aiding treatment for any physical or mental condition is to follow a balanced diet with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Reducing fat, salt and sugar intake does a lot to stabilize the blood chemicals which affect mental health. It can help to take a high quality vitamin and mineral supplement if you believe nutrition could have anything to do with your symptoms. Nutritional imbalance has been repeatedly found to be at the bottom of many mental illnesses. Activity/Exercise For Depression: There is possibly no greater natural remedy for depression than activity and exercise. Our bodies reward us for healthy activity by producing natural chemicals, called endorphins, which give us feelings of well-being. The more strenuous the exercise, the more endorphins, but any positive activity can produce them...play the piano...mow the lawn...wash dishes...make the bed, it doesn't matter. Sexual activity produces a high level of endorphins along with other chemicals that help fight depression. Of course, you don't feel like it, but if you force yourself to to do things despite how you feel, you'll begin to feel better. Not being active is guaranteed to make your condition worse. Attitude Techniques To Control Depression: This idea of forcing yourself to be active ties in well with attitude. Now, I'm not one of those people who believes depression is just having a bad attitude about life...it isn't that simple. On the other hand, if you're willing to do regular work on your attitude, you can dramatically reduce the symptoms of depression. Attitude has to do with what you believe about life. By controlling what you think, you can eliminate the self-defeating beliefs and replace them with positive, uplifting, motivating beliefs. This requires mental discipline...literally forcing yourself to think positively until your feelings catch up. It works by planning positive thoughts to replace the negative ones...for instance, replace, "What difference will it make?" with "I matter. I can make a difference." Every time a negative thought comes in, replace it with the opposite thought. It even feels like self-deception for a while, until you actually begin to believe things are looking up. In the interest of thinking positive, listen to uplifting music and read stories with happy endings instead of watching the News or Drama programs. It isn't easy to change your beliefs about life, but it's worth it. So, by using natural remedies, most people with depression can reduce or eliminate their symptoms, or, as a minimum, aid in their treatment. When you eliminate addictions, follow a healthy, natural diet, become more physically active, and follow a positive mental discipline, you can make amazing strides toward a normal, productive, satisfying life. I know it isn't easy to do all those things, but, tell me something. How easy has it been for you, not doing them? Article Source: http://www.ArticleBlast.com |
