How to Take Care of Baby Teeth

Many parents don't think it is important to take care of their baby's first teeth because they are not the permanent ones. This is not true. Baby's first teeth should be carefully brushed by the parent twice a day, but without toothpaste. When the child is a little older, a small amount of fluoride toothpaste may be used, but be sure the child spits it out rather than swallowing it. If the first teeth are allowed to decay without treatment, then it is highly likely that they will infect the permanent teeth that come through.

If those first teeth do develop decay they should be filled rather than pulled. Good first teeth will help your baby learn to speak clearly and to chew their food correctly. They also help to guide the second teeth into the correct place.

A paediatric dentist is one who has taken additional training in how to treat children's teeth. Children should be taken to a paediatric dentist twice a year to make sure their teeth a healthy and developing normally. Some dentists don't like the parent to accompany the child into the treatment room, but for the first few visits it will help the child to feel safe if a parent is present. Communicating clearly with your chosen dentist about your expectations will help the visit to go smoothly.
