Even if our brain itself is not sensitive to pain, other areas of the skull such as the scalp, face, mouth and throat have nerve fibers that are sensitive to pain and which can hurt. Headache - or cephalgia - commonly refers to any sort of pain that would appear in those sensitive areas of the skull. Headaches can be belong to one of two groups: Primary headaches, such as stress headache, cluster headache and migraine headache, which are not caused by any other condition; And Secondary headaches which are caused by an illness. Headaches are the most common nervous affliction. Everybody will suffer from them at one point , but for 55 million Americans, it is a usual thing. The World Health Organization claims that one adult in 20 suffers from frequent headaches, with females being more at risk than men. Headaches can be extremely disabling and might very negatively affect the lives of individuals who have to go through them. Work capacity is diminished for such individuals, which can be detrimental to their economic situation. The ability to socialize is also limited as the pain, or the fear thereof, may make people more tense. People with migraine even have to constantly pay attention to everything they eat, everything they see, and last but not least everything they smell, because some strong or displeasing sensations may trigger pain. Since headaches are seen as such a banal, benign condition, people who suffer from them on a regular basis also have to face the incomprehension of their peers. This social barrier can also prevent people from seeking medical attention and benefiting from a proper treatment. However before it can be treated, your headache has to be "identified". We have already seen that there are two main types of headache: Primary and Secondary, each divided in turn into many other subcategories. Their symptoms can differ as well as their causes and, obviously, how they should be cured. That is why they have to be identified by a specialist in order to be given an adequate treatment. Stress headache, also referred to as tension headache, is the most typical type of primary headache and is responsible for about 90% of all headaches. It is usually seen as related to stress or related to musculoskeletal problems in the neck. Tension headache is mostly episodic and can persist from several minutes to several hours, but might persist for numerous days in the most severe cases. It is typically described as a constant pressure, generally on both sides of the head, or encircling it, at times also extending to the neck. Migraine is relatively different and is believed to most certainly have a genetic cause. Migraines are caused by the release by the brain of painful substances, which spread to the nerves and vessels of the head. Migraine typically happens once a month and persists for a few hours, accompanied by symptoms such as nausea and intolerance of regular degrees of light and sound. Cluster headaches often happen frequently and are short lasting. They are also extremely painful. They occur in clusters of 6 to 12 weeks and every one or two years, generally at the same time of the year. The pain is extremely strong and affects the whole head, very often beginning with the eye, and then affecting the forehead, nose and mouth. It is much more rare than some other kinds of headache and mostly affects men. Headaches are typically treated using over-the-counter analgesic drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen or paracetamol. A doctor may also tell you to avoid some common causes of headaches such as noise or certain foods. Caffeine, Magnesium and Vitamin B2 have also proven effective in order to treat migraine. Drugs are however expensive and sometimes have undesired side effects, particularly for people who must use them on a regular basis. That is why you may want to consider other ways of preventing and fighting the numerous kinds of headache. Hypnosis and NLP (Neuro-linguistic programming) have indeed proven to be effective and will help you to dissipate pain in any part of your body, including your head, as well as trying to be more relaxed meanwhile. Stress is a very common cause of headache, and adequate hypnotic techniques exist to dissipate both stress and headaches in a few seconds. People who suffer from migraine or cluster headache are generally able to feel the first symptoms before the migraine really occurs, and may learn self-hypnosis techniques to get rid of them before they get too painful. Hypnotherapists who understand how disabling a headache can be have designed these methods. Hypnotherapy is a drug free method of treatment that will help you to find the relief you have been looking for. Headache is a serious affliction with various forms, affecting millions of people worldwide. Learn to fight it and to relax with the comforting method of self hypnosis.
