Nature, it seems, is a big fan of surprises. While each living day is a miracle, there is so much uncertainty inbuilt in everyday life, that almost all cultures have started believing in the concept of destiny and fate. Perhaps, this is nature's way of adding a bit of spice in our otherwise mundane existence.

There cannot be a single couple who have not spent hours wondering about the baby's gender during the term of the pregnancy. Many castles are built making the child a sports star or beauty queen months before they were born. This has led to many scientific and unscientific gender prediction techniques.

1) One old wives' tale instructs adding the urine of the pregnant mother to a cup of Drano. According to this technique, dark color of the solution indicates a baby girl. However, if the color remains unaffected, start thinking cute names for a baby boy.

2) Another one of these says that if the pregnant mother craves for fatty and sweet things like cakes and pastries, it ought to be a baby girl behind the cravings. But, if the mother gets rid of the sweet tooth and wants tangy and spicy food, it has to be a baby boy.

3) While the above mentioned gender prediction techniques are just fun tips with no rational basis, medical science has advanced considerably. Now, all it takes is a visit to an ultrasound center to know your yet-to-be-born baby's gender. According to medical science, 16 weeks into pregnancy the fetus is developed enough to show gender specific characteristics. Ultrasound waves are targeted on the fetus which reflects them back. These reflected waves are analyzed by the computer to create images on the screen, which are studied by experts to know the gender, growth rate and the due date of the baby. This method comes with a high success rate and is acknowledged worldwide.

4) Nowadays, several gender prediction kits are available online and in medical stores which can compute the fetal chromosomes and DNA in blood sample to safely predict the gender of the baby from the safe confines of the home.
