Diabetes and Gum Disease |

Studies have found that diabetes and gum disease are linked due to several causes. One of these is the fact that diabetes slows down the circulation, which makes the gums more susceptible to infection. Having diabetes also lowers a person's resistance to infection, while the high glucose levels in saliva - causing excess bacterial growth - also play a contributing part in the problem. Those diabetics who can maintain good control over their blood sugar levels are less likely to develop gum disease than those who are unable to do so. Diabetics who cannot maintain control due to unstable diabetes are not only more likely to develop gum disease, but they get it more severely. If a diabetic also smokes then - according to several studies - they are much more likely to get gum disease than the diabetics who do not smoke. If all this sounds like bad news, then don't despair because if your gum disease is diagnosed and treated early, then it is actually reversible. So don't think your teeth are going to fall out and there is nothing you can do to prevent it. Good oral hygiene, treatment from the dentist, a healthy diet and controlling your blood sugar levels will all play a part in saving your teeth. Article Source: http://www.ArticleBlast.com |
