In years gone by when teeth had to be removed, the patient would then be supplied with false teeth or a set of 'partials'. While better than nothing, false teeth or a partial plate tend to move when being used for chewing or talking. This movement affects their function and often causes pain or discomfort to the wearer. For instance, when a seed or food particle lodges under the plate. Dental implants, while probably more expensive, provide a better alternative to dentures. Not everyone is suited to receive a dental implant, as much depends on the quality and availability of the bone in the jaw. Implants are made from titanium that will then integrate into the bone. The false tooth can then be securely attached to the implant. The process may take from three to twelve months, depending on exactly what needs to be done, but during that time the dentist will provide a temporary plate. The patient needs to be in good health to receive an implant. Certain diseases such as diabetes would compromise the success of the procedure. The best candidates are those people who would otherwise wear partials that are wired to other teeth. This process causes food to accumulate around the wire and that leads to more tooth decay.
