In years gone by when teeth had to be removed, the patient would then be supplied with false teeth or a set of 'partials'. While better than nothing, false teeth or a partial plate tend to move when being used for chewing or talking. This movement affects their function and often causes pain or discomfort to the wearer. For instance, when a seed or food particle lodges under the plate.

Dental implants, while probably more expensive, provide a better alternative to dentures. Not everyone is suited to receive a dental implant, as much depends on the quality and availability of the bone in the jaw. Implants are made from titanium that will then integrate into the bone.
