Insect bites can become not only irritating, but also painful, and even deadly. Thus, it is important that before we enjoy the great outdoors, we have a better understanding about insect bites and stings, and how to treat them. When insects bite or sting, we must be concerned about our body's reaction to the venom. The severity of the reaction can range from minor, to fatal. Insect venom allergies are genetic, and usually appear sometime after the first exposure to the venom. Any insect bite could lead to complications with infection. If the bite area turns red, becomes painful or feels hot, there is a chance than an infection has developed. If this happens, you should see your doctor for further treatment. Rocky Mountain spotted fever. This can be a fatal disease so if you notice rashes around your ankles or wrists, (may spread to the rest of your body) or severe headaches accompanied by a high fever you should see your doctor right away. In most cases insect bites are harmless and if left alone, the irritation will subside within 48 hours. However, for some people, particularly children, scratching bites may lead to a highly contagious bacterial skin infection called impetigo. Left unchecked, impetigo can spread to other parts of the body and even from person to person. Bedbugs reside all over the world. Bedbugs are most often found in places where large numbers of people come and go such as in hotels, motels, hostels, and shelters. They can also be found in apartment complexes and in residential homes. Because bedbugs are small and flat, they can hide in small crevices like the seams of mattresses, head boards, floor boards, garbage, and carpet. House Dust Mites come in difference sizes ranging from 1/200 to 1/25 of an inch. Some are not visible while others will appear as tiny black, gray or red oval specks. These insects have four legs and mouth parts grouped together in such a way that they look like they have a head. Fresh-herb poultices are a little more complicated, but not by much. Just find a healing leaf, pluck it, chew it, and apply it directly to the sting/bite. If you wish, use a large leaf or an adhesive bandage to hold the poultice in place. Plantain, comfrey, yellow dock wild geranium, wild mallow, chickweed, and yarrow are only a few of the possibilities. Human flea bites generally occur along the ankles and lower portions of the legs. A flea bite can usually be described as a red spot accompanied by a halo of redness that can last for several hours depending on one's reaction to it. It may causes a slight irritation or itch in some people while others with extreme allergies will sometimes break out into hives and have excessive swelling. Children tend to have more sensitive skin and as such, flea bites seen in children are usually more severe than in adults. Wash affected area with a mild antiseptic soap or detergent. Put an ice pack over the affect area. This will help in reducing swelling and inflammation. Apply some calamine lotion to relieve the itch. A mild steroid cream like hydrocortisone which are easily available from a local pharmacy will be useful in relieving the swellings and itch more rapidly.
