In addition to controlling your diet, you have to burn your fat off by exercising. Doing only stomach exercises such as sit-ups and crunches will not be sufficient. In fact, they can be counterproductive as they can sometimes cause your abdominal muscles to protrude.

You definitely need to do specific stomach exercises to tone those muscles, but you have to burn the fat covering them else they will never be seen. This can only be achieved through cardio workouts.
