For Decades Doctor's Use This Treatment for Vision Issues...Now Used to Reduce Wrinkles

Botox has become a well used cosmetic enhancement over the last few years by ridding people of age line and wrinkles; for such a recognized treatment it is surprising how many people haven't a clue how it works. In order to appreciate just what this is we need a brief history lesson into its discovery, quite a while ago now. It may be famous now for its use in cosmetic surgery but it wasn't always that way when it was first being studied by scientists half a century ago; it was tested for use as a treatment for disorders of the mind.

Then a few decades later in 1989, the Federal Drug Administration in America finally approved its use to treat disorders associated with vision; these included people with eyes that were not aligned correctly and those that suffered from uncontrollable blinking called blepharospasm. In the year 2000 was given the all clear for the of treatment cervical dystonia. this disorder causes severe neck and shoulder contractions but they also permitted it to be used with other eye problems. Scientists found that if the botox drug was injected into the lines between the eyebrows it would gradually soften them and make them disappear; after further tests in 2002 the FDA allowed it to be used for the first cosmetic enhancement and the drug finally had a new field of use.

When Botox is injected into the muscles of the forehead, it blocks nerve impulses which results in the weakening of the muscles that cause frowning; after a number of treatments the lines start to lessen. Continued treatments mean in many cases the lines disappear and now the same treatment is used on other areas of the face like the crows' feet, laughter lines and other facial wrinkles. The injections are actually a diluted form of botulism; because of the purification process it can be used in cosmetic surgery.

The problem is that when we laugh, cry or frown for example, lines and wrinkles appear caused by the muscles that have helped create the expression; these injections can help eliminate those lines. This treatment is able to take back, for a temporary period, all those years of lines, creases and wrinkles that has formed from the use of our facial muscles; many cosmetic manufacturers have tried to create creams to eliminate the creases but this is the only treatment to date that can actually rid them from us. Muscles in the area of the botox injection become paralyzed temporarily so they cannot move fully; people who have regular treatment often look as though they are dummies because they cannot smile properly or make other facial gestures that we tend to rely on.

Depending on the amount of treatments, a person can look fairly normal but their facial gestures will be restricted so that the creases and lines do not show. Whilst popular this cosmetic treatment is still very expensive for what it is; some single injections costing in the low to high hundreds of dollars. Whether there are any long term effects from continued use of botox is still unknown as the treatment is still to new but for those people who do use it, it doesn't seem to matter.
