Pain is explained as a disagreeable sensation that can range from mild, localized soreness to unrelenting torment. This experience contains both physiological and psychological aspects. Pain often is responsible for a lack of activity and excitement. These individuals experience exhaustion and emotionally distressed. The pain response can negatively affect professional, private, and personal relationships. When injury occurs, the body releases signals that tell the brain that something is wrong. The brain interprets this message as injury, and advises the person of the injury. The person then acts in response to this message, and works to relieve it. Often, however, the brain receives a painful signal when the body is not injured. This happens when the sensation has an emotional, instead of a physical, origin. One approach to resolving painful sensations is through the use of medicine. Non-narcotic medications, such as Tylenol or Aspirin, stop cells from discharging messages whose job is to warn the brain of painful stimuli. Narcotic medications, however, attach to the brain and warn them that the issue has been addressed. Narcotics, like Demerol and codeine, can be very addictive and create dependency in those persons who take them for a long time as pain management techniques. The body also releases substances called endorphins. These are completely natural painkillers, released by the brain's cells to advise the body that it does not hurt. Runners, for instance, release endorphins after running long distances; this is the source of the "runner's high" often discussed by those who are running enthusiasts. People who enjoy taking part in other sports have a similar endorphin release. Sometimes, athletes can run or play even with pain due to the presence of these chemicals in their bodies. Painful experiences can also be treated by through the use of distraction, or coached visualization. Clients are helped to focus on a mental picture or to think of a peaceful and relaxing setting that offers freedom from the hurt they are experiencing. Alternatively, music or other activities can be used to provide this distraction. These techniques sometimes are very helpful to people who suffer from ongoing lower back pain. Persons sometimes experience relief through the use of hypnosis and Neuro-Linguistic programming tools. These natural pain relief techniques can allow people to receive relief from various disabling problems, such as migraines and other chronic, debilitating headaches or throbbing neck pain. This technique assists clients to train their subconscious minds to instantly move past a painful sensation, and to focus on things that will offer peace and calm. Clients who have learned this strategy discover that they are no longer capable of focusing on their pain, because their minds instantly swap it for thoughts. Both NLP and hypnotherapy are new strategies that offer completely natural methods to relieve pain. They encourage people to avoid painkillers or reduce their requirement for these painkillers. Both individuals who very suggestible and individuals who are critical thinkers can be helped by these [program structures.
