Social phobia can be limited to only one type of situation—such as a fear of speaking in formal or informal situations, or eating or drinking in front of others—or, in its most severe form, may be so broad that a person experiences symptoms almost anytime they are around other people. Social phobia can be very debilitating—it may even keep people from going to work or school on some days. Many people with this illness have a hard time making and keeping friends.

Social phobia or social anxiety disorder comes in many forms. For some people, it crops up in specific situations, most commonly public speaking. In other people, it may manifest as fear of dating or talking to an authority figure. For others, it is a more generalized fear of interacting with people you don't know or aren't comfortable with.

Social phobia (or social anxiety) is an intense and irrational fear of being judged by others in a social, work or performance situation - or of being embarrassed or humiliated in such situations - causing dread, panic and avoidance.More accurately, it is not the scrutiny and negative judgements themselves but the sufferer's own emotional response to them - the feelings of shame, rejection or humiliation.

The most used solutions to help relief social phobia are medications and psychotherapy. There are many anti depressants and anti anxiety medications that help reduce the symptoms of social phobia such as anxiety and depression. The downside of medications is that they do cause side effects and most people try many medications before finding the one that really help them the most without dangerous side effects. This is why you need to consult your doctor or physician and ask him for advice.

Shyness and Social Anxiety Disorder are differentiated by the intensity of feeling and reactivity to a situation or thought. Whereas the shy person may avoid certain types of settings to keep anxiety at bay, the socially phobic person will often worry about them all the time and stressing about them in advance. He will also experience higher degrees of anxiety and even panic when he is forced to function in certain situations.

You've got to cultivate the habit of smiling always - it's to your own advantage. It makes you happy and healthier; in fact your life expectancy is prolonged when you have more happy cells. When you smile to people, some will definitely return it, others will say some commendatory soothing words which all add up to build your self worth - a feeling that you're wanted, that you belong. So why not get out there and smile. Do not be a jackal either.

For social phobia sufferers, often the most crucial step in resolving their problems or effectuating a recovery is real life desensitization. An important component to real life desensitization is the relaxation techniques and countering mistaken mental beliefs that helps in the desensitization process. A great way to combat those troublesome beliefs that everyone will think you are stupid, weird, awkward, or just plain dumb is Positive-Thought-Redirection.
