As many as one-fourth of all children cope with the emotional pain of facial tics. This condition can most accurately be described as a repetitive, continual spasm that affects both facial and eye muscles. The exact cause is often unknown, but research shows a significant connection between stressors and an increase in severity of symptoms.

Another explanation for the development of tics is a deficit in essential vitamins or minerals, such as magnesium. Some types of facial tics are manifestations of disorders of the nervous system, such as Tourette syndrome, a condition caused by a malfunction of the nervous system. Tourette syndrome is thought to contain a hereditary facet as well.

A few examples of a facial tic include rapid eye movements or eye blinking, squinting, mouth or nose wrinkling, twitching, grunting, mouth twitches, facial grimacing, facial twitches, and throat clearing. The spasm often originates during childhood years, and may last for only a few weeks or for several years. Sometimes, the condition persists into adulthood.

Facial tics can perpetuate and potentiate anxiety-related behaviors in a child whose stress levels are already high as a result of the condition itself. Other children can be incredibly unkind, making fun of the child's problem. Worse, educators who lack understanding and are unable to assist other students to empathize and assist the child in managing his problem can create a devastatingly negative effect on a child's self image.

This issue, however, is not limited to the afflicted youth. Adults who are affected by a facial tic find this extremely difficult to manage. These people frequently encounter overwhelming social difficulties. In some cases, a person can learn to recognize the onset and master the spasm that causes the facial tic. Even this, however, can become emotionally and physically exhausting. Low self-esteem is often a major issue with which these people wrestle. Often, these individuals struggle with low self-esteem.

Grownups who obtain relief from the humiliating effects of facial grimaces and other tics can experience social rebirth. Their view of themselves is altered, and they no longer are afraid to experience the fullness of life. Children who successfully this problem no longer are burdened by the paralyzing stress that cripples their social lives, and experience childhood with joy rather than emotional pain.

Sometimes, medications, such as mildly sedating drugs, help individuals manage this problem. Although the medications may decrease the appearance of these symptoms, the medications themselves can often cause adverse effects. Because of this, persons sometimes rely on alternative treatments to assist them in treating their problem.

Two treatment approaches that have demonstrated exciting potential in helping people to successfully manage facial tics are hypnosis and NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming). These therapies capitalize on the strengths of the individual's unconscious mind to help them control the spasm. Because these treatments address the root of the difficulty by intervening in the unconscious where the problem originates, they are significantly more beneficial than traditional therapy approaches that merely attempt to control eye blinking, mouth twitches, squinting, facial grimacing, facial twitches, grunting, or other types of impulsive behavior.

Hypnotherapy permits the client to achieve a peaceful trancelike state and receive suggestions that allow them to expel tension. Because tics are a result of suppressed anxiety within a person's body, expelling this tension helps them to successfully manage this behavior. After several sessions, the client should be able to experience the ability to handle tension successfully.

Those therapists who employ NLP assist the client to channel his or her mind to use thoughts that stress them as triggers for thoughts that will relax them. Moreover, the individual learns to use a non-related body part, like a toe, to re-channel the emotional energy that would otherwise be manifested by the facial tic. This technique allows individuals to overcome tension without resorting to the humiliating behavior.

Another positive outcome of these two therapies is that the person being treated avoids the experience of adverse effects from medication type therapies. For this reason, both hypnosis and NLP are typically viewed as the primary treatment for individuals who are afflicted by tics, such as nose wrinkling, or throat clearing, because these interventions do not have unwanted side effects. This relieves considerable pain and distress for the sufferer.

Summary: Facial tics are frequently socially destructive and may yield extreme consequences. Male children are most likely to demonstrate this difficulty, which can persist into adulthood; however girls may also have difficulties with tics. Although several treatment methods exist, hypnosis and NLP seem to be the most prudent methods, because they have no undesirable side effects and are very effective.
