Steam bath is one of the most important time-tested water treatments which induces perspiration in a most natural way. The patient, clad in minimum loin cloth or underwear, is made to sit on a stool inside a specially designed cabinet. Before entering the cabinet, the patient should drink one or two glasses of cold water and protect the head with a cold towel. The duration of the steam bath is generally 10 to 20 minutes or until perspiration takes place. A cold shower should be taken immediately after the bath.

Steam baths have a constant humidity level around 100%. They are kept at about 40 degrees Celsius, a much lower temperature than the Swedish tradition, and many people prefer the steam bath. The high humidity makes breathing easier and has beneficial effects on the respiratory system.

In a steam bath it is moist heat. The steam bath uses a steam generator. The sauna has very low humidity, whereas the steam bath has high humidity. In a steam bath the steam builds up to create a humidity level of around 100%. Because of the humidity factor the heat in the sauna is far higher than that of the steam bath. The difference in temperature can be anywhere from 40°C to 60°C.

Another added benefit of a steam bath or sauna is it helpful in dealing with muscular pain that many people suffer from. A steam bath taken after a heavy workout in the gym etc., is a great way of speeding up the healing process to any damaged tissues or muscle. The heat allows the blood vessels to become enlarged and increases the circulation of blood around the body resulting in more oxygen being allowed to get to the parts of the body that have been injured. Not only does this reduce the pain that a person is feeling but it also helps to speed up the healing process as well.

In a steam bath you have a moist heat resulting in more water in the air; the steam can be relaxing and stress relieving, even releasing toxins and free radicals that may allow for better overall health. Both saunas and steam baths relieve tension and relax the muscles.

People are also realizing the relaxing and stress relieving benefits of a steam bath. Individuals with arthritis or aches may find that the heat produced by the steam bath relaxes muscles, relieving pain and inflammation. People with asthma also welcome the respiratory benefits of a steam bath, as it dilates air passageways of the lung and aids in the breathing process. Steam baths also promote sweating. Sweat is a natural way for the skin to purify the pores and remove dirt and grime, as well as giving the skin a healthy glow. Some believe sweating to be therapeutic and relaxing to the mind. To each their own.

If your bathroom is not suitable for adding a steam shower there are plenty of units that can be set up in other locations of your home. All that is needed is a well ventilated area large enough for your desired unit. These units can range from the basic steam bath to a more expensive model designed to give you all the benefits you'd enjoy at a health spa. Features can include simulated rainfall, body massager, and overhead speaker system. There are also steam rooms that can operate as either a steam sauna.
