Well it is not a surprise to many who post their wares on the web, that a majority of the content on the web is spam, but a new study on internet security by Websense, shows that the amount of this material on the web totals about 95% of all the content. Now imagine how much smaller the web would be without it. And it is not just websites, but e-mails as well. Even many links are corrupt leading to sites that are phishing sites and so forth. About 14% of all searches that included news worthy issues led to malicious websites. And the number of phishing websites is actually on the rise. And it is not just phishing sites that you must watch out for, as the number of legitimate sites that have been invaded by some type of malicious coding is over 70%. Sometimes a site does appear to be something safe and you can't tell that it does have security issues that you don't realize. That is why you take risks when you put your personal info out online. There are ways that people have figured out to combat this issue. One is using a prepaid credit card or some other type of card that has limited funds available. This will help you from losing money but makes you still susceptible to having your identity stolen. Stick with websites of companies that you know you can trust and avoid following links to other websites. Most times your computer will let you know when you are being directed to another website. Be aware of this and avoid traveling to unknown websites where content may be malicious. Also, be wary of pop-ups that can often times contain malware as well. Always watch the web address when you switch pages and look for the security lock whenever you are going to enter personal information. Following these simple tips will help you avoid potential problems while on the web. Be sure to have a spy ware program in place as well, to help you detect the problems that you may not see.
