While there are many reasons that people choose to work from home, one of the most popular is to work from home after a new baby is born. Although new moms or dads may have several weeks of sick leave built up so that they can stay at home with the new baby and still be paid, the time comes when sick leave is used up and the decision has to be made about returning to work. Instead of returning to the office, why not choose to work from home. There are many work at home opportunities that allow new moms or dads to work from home and still provide an income for their family. These opportunities are excellent for nursing moms. For many of the positions, all that is required is a home computer. Since you are working at home, you may be able to set your own schedule as long as you complete the work by the deadline. If your baby keeps you awake at night, you can spend time typing at the computer while consoling the child. As your child grows, you can change your work schedule to work around their needs. If you need to take a few hours off for a play date, then you simply make it up later that evening. Working from home takes discipline, especially for the new mom or dad. It seems that there are endless distractions in your home from the laundry to the television. You have to remember that you need to focus your work time on work, but be flexible enough that you are providing great childcare to that new addition to your family. As you begin thinking of working from home, begin by seeing if telecommuting is an option from the company where you are currently employed. The best time to do this is before your child is born. If telecommuting is a option for you, you may still need to come into the office one or two days per week. The benefits of working for the same company are that your years of experience and seniority will count and you may be able to keep all of your benefits, such as retirement and insurance. In addition, you may be able to return to the office in a few years when the new little one begins school. If telecommuting from your current job is not an option, then you will need to begin with an assessment of your skills. What skills do you now have that could transfer to a work from home opportunity. If you have typing skills or can write, there are many opportunities for typist and freelance writers. Other opportunities exist for graphic designers, engineers or CAD drafters. Even nurses can choose to work from home. The company will provide you with a cell phone and laptop. You will answer calls for patients that call in after hours or on weekends. Since you will also have access to a doctor, you can call that doctor for situations needing his attention.
