How your image on social media sites can impact on your career

It seems that everyone these days has a MySpace or Facebook or other social networking account, and in many cases have more than one. Updating your status, posting your latest thoughts, what you're up to, or images of the previous night's merriment can be addictive. It can also be a problem when it comes to looking for a job!

Many employers these days use Facebook and Google to research potential employees. When you go for an interview the chances are that your potential employer will have already Googled your name and searched for any mention of you online. If you have a Facebook account, and you haven't set your privacy settings, then your whole profile, including any photos you may have uploaded or been tagged in, will be visible to your potential employer.

This should, quite rightly, spark fear in many people's minds as often the sort of things added to Facebook profiles aren't suitable for family members to see, let alone employers.

Even after you have a job, Facebook can be your downfall. Many careers have ended due to people updating their Facebook status in work time, or having boasted on Facebook how they've taken a false sick day from work and haven't realised their boss can see their profile.

Remember that Facebook and other social networking websites can be advantageous in your job search if you manage your profiles professionally, but if you fill your profiles with drunken photos and foul language, you could end any jobs before they start.
