How you determine your niche market is the most important aspect of affiliate marketing. You can create the right ads but still lose money on your ads campaign. Imagine a company spending years and years to develop a product to discover there is no demand for it. So, in order to succeed in affiliate marketing, you need to make sure that you choose the product or service to promote. A couple ways you can do to find your niche market:
  1. You can probably start off with your own hobbies or expertise. For instant, you like to play video games, then you can probably try to promote a video game console like Sony Playstation 3, XBox 360, etc.
  2. What if you dont have any hobbies or expertise ? Then you can get some ideas from http://www.magazines.com. There are all sorts of categories you can choose. Every magazines were created out there because people believe there is a demand for those topics. For example: health and fitness, mountain-biking, snowboarding, etc.
  3. Dont limit yourself to something you know because you might realize that there are a lot other topics you dont know a thing about that people are searching for.
After you got your subject, then you go to http://inventory.overture.com. What this site about is you can find out how many searches people conduct on a particular keyword in a given month of the year. This number is not exactly correct, but it can give us an approximate number. Overture is actually yahoo search engine so you might want to multiply the number by five in order to get a closer number from google. From here, you can choose which keyword you want to promote. Two things you need to note are:
  1. Dont choose a too-broad-keyword. A broad keyword will give you untargeted visitors/clicks and remember, you are paying google for every click you get. Lots of untargeted clicks will cost you lots of money. For instance: instead of choosing canon digital cameras, you might be better promote canon tx-1 digital camera.
  2. You can choose either a very famous keyword but that means you will compete against all the big boys or a not-so-popular keyword but there is much less competition. Less competition means cheaper to advertise. This tactics are called using "the long-tail keywords". From my experience, any number above 4000 searches might be good enough.
After you find a product/service to promote, next you need to search for a profitable affiliate program. Go to google and type "your keyword + affiliate". Make sure you compare a couple of affiliate programs and find the one with bigger commissions or if you are directing all sales to your merchant, then a nice and friendly website will also be a factor.
