Even though it's not something to look forward to, things do break, and the Xbox 360 isn't an exception. Sometimes, consoles will simply stop working, as the hardware fails and it's not something to be surprised about.

According to some estimates, almost one third of all the Xbox 360's that were sold since the launch in 2005, had a problem with their hardware at one time or another. If you do a bit of Xbox 360 troubleshooting you will probably find that the problem isn't serious. Usually the problem is overheating, caused by too much gameplay.

Microsoft knows about the problem of overheating and they tell owners of Xbox 360 consoles what they should do to address it. Experts in Xbox 360 consoles say that the solution to the three glowing red lights is unplugging the console and plugging it back after that.

You should do this until the green light shows up, so you know that the Xbox 360 has rebooted properly. In many cases, this will solve your problem. In other cases, shutting it down for some time will allow it to cool down and that is sufficient. If it happens regularly, you should try to take the troubleshooting to the next level.

This is the moment when most people will turn to the Internet to find the solution for their problem. You will find a number of good ideas online, but you will also find a few bad ones. Ideally, you should look at the Microsoft site, and see what their experts have to say about the error you encountered. It's possible that they have a software update for your problem, which you can install. Overall, Microsoft has a pretty good record when it comes to keeping their consoles in working order. When software problems appear, a fix is usually released pretty fast.

If a simple software update will not fix your problem, you should probably send the unit to a service, to be repaired. The problem is that you will stay without a console for up to six weeks and you don't really have a choice in the matter, unless you know how to fix a gaming console. Ideally, the console will still be under warranty, so the cost will be zero to you, as Microsoft will cover everything.

With a bit of luck, all you need to do to fix a console is to allow the system to cool off by unplugging it. If this doesn't fix the problem, you should either get it replaced, or fixed.
