There is no doubt that computers are a key part of schools, lessons and life in the 21st century. Many school children know more about computers than their parents do. But while this is a good thing in some ways - it will certainly prepare them for a better future - it can also have a downside. This is no more evident than where the internet is concerned.
The safer internet access is at school, the better it will be for all concerned. Luckily there are many different ways we can ensure our children are safe in this setting, and are not in danger of visiting any websites they shouldn't see.
Perhaps the most important initial step that can be taken is simply to ensure children are educated to the dangers of the internet. Going online can be hazardous in all kinds of ways, from accessing dubious sites to downloading something that can infect one or more computers.
The way these aspects are educated will depend on how old the children are. Access to computers should also depend on age. For example secondary school children can be trusted with more access, provided they adhere to strict safety and usage rules set down by the school.
As you can see, teaching pupils about how to use computers in a safe and responsible way is just as important as teaching them how to use them practically for specific tasks. Educating them about peripheral items such as memory sticks and so on is also equally important, as viruses and bugs can also be transmitted between computers by using these.
Recognising the kind of information which should be shared - and more importantly not shared - online is also highly important. Once again if children do not realise that it can be dangerous to reveal their full name online, they will be far more likely to do so. Kids can pick up and learn all kinds of things at a young age, so it is vital that we ensure they learn how to use and access the internet safely as soon as possible.
This education should also stretch to emails and similar forms of communication online. And one of the best ways to do this is to create a lesson based around this topic. It is also a good way to open up discussion with pupils to gauge how they feel about going online and using an email account.
This is also a good setting to use interactive and internet based technology in. For example, by using interactive whiteboards teachers can show pupils exactly how to stay safe and what to avoid when they go online.
The internet is certainly a huge development and a necessary thing to learn about for all children. But safety must always come first, in schools and beyond. Article Source: http://www.ArticleBlast.com |
