Using the Web to Make Telephone Calls

When you want to speak to friends and family you generally think of using the telephone to do so, but what about using the internet?

Developments in communication technologies mean it is now possible to make low cost or even free calls via the internet. To get yourself up and running you will need a computer with broadband connection, speakers and a microphone. You can use your computer's built-in microphone and speakers - if it has these - or you may want to purchase headsets to make your calls with.

The general rule of thumb in order to make free calls via the internet is that you and the person you want to call are using the same provider to actually host the calls. However, all is not lost if you do not use the same provider because the internet can still be used to host cheap long distance calls to landlines and mobiles. If you make use of internet calling then it's quite likely your provider will offer less expensive long distance calls in comparison to the provider of your standard landline.

In order to make calls via the internet you will be required to download the specific software from your provider's website, complete the installation process and then get talking! Internet calls work with your standard broadband connection, so there's nothing else to set up. The registration and set-up process is generally straightforward, so even infrequent computer and internet users should be able to make use of the World Wide Web to chat for less.

Once you've got yourself up and running you can then make and receive calls at any time of the day or night - and to anywhere in the world. This is particularly handy if you have friends and family in far flung places or need to make international business calls.

One of the common worries about making long distance calls is the related cost and it's easy for the pounds to mount up, especially if you make calls on a frequent basis. Using the internet to host your calls usually cuts costs to begin with, but you could also investigate any subscription services your provider offers. This is a fairly common option that allows you to chat to people in other countries for less - you simply set up a subscription to a country that's different from the one you live in.

There are usually packages to choose from such as a subscription to one other country, Europe or worldwide. Therefore, whether you need to make cheap calls to Norway, Nebraska or Nepal, you can choose a package to match your needs.
