For Windows-based computers, you are lucky to be able to use the Plug and Play feature when it comes to computer monitors. Not so fast, though, because there is an exception to this rule. It is when you are using a very old video card and/or monitor combinations OR having the newest one with a very special functionality like a touch screen for example. Like any other computer hardware, it is important to regularly update your display device. To do monitor driver updates, take note of the brand and model of your monitor which is usually located at the back of the said hardware. Go to the manufacturer's website and download it. To perform monitor driver updates without the use of any external program (assuming you are using WinXP), you can try these steps: • Go to the "Start Menu" and go to the "Control Panel". • In the pop-up window, click the "Performance and Maintenance" option. • Select "See basic information about your computer" under the header "Pick a task." • Go to the "Hardware" tab. • Click "Device Manager". • Click the item "Display Adapter" to expand it. • Select "Update Drivers" from the pop-up menu that occurred after right clicking your display adapter contents. • On the new window, highlight "Yes, this time only." and click "Next". • Highlight the circle that says "Install the software automatically" and click "Next". • The wizard will now search for updates for your computer. • Wait for the wizard to install them and then select "Finish" when prompted. • Restart your computer by selecting "OK" and you are done with your monitor driver updates. But what if you experience problems like these? • Don't know your device manufacturer • You can't find your manufacturer's website • Device manufacturer ran out of business • You can't find any driver updates You can try using an external program called automatic driver scanners. This program won't only allow you to conduct monitor driver updates, it also takes the time to update all your drivers and automatically install them for you. Easy, isn't it?
