Challenge to Number Porting Schedule

Quicker number porting. UK network not happy with new schedule.

Last year Ofcom said that the time it takes to move a number from one mobile network to another must be reduced from five days, which it is now. By April 2008 all numbers must be ported in two days, and by 2009 this must be cut again to just two hours.
This change is because customers are being put off switching due to the slow and complicated process, the new rules should encourage customers to change networks to take up more competitive deals.
However, Vodafone have lodged a complaint with the Competition Appeal Tribunal, they feel the new ruling is unnecessary and may actually lead to more customers being mis-sold and scammed into mobile deals - as customers will be able to be switched quickly and without knowing.
However, Vodafone is mostly worried about the cost implication, to allow calls to be routed to switched numbers directly all networks must create a central database of all numbers. Ofcom have estimated the cost for this at £12 million, Vodafone feel it is going to be more like £24 million.
Britain was among the first to be able to switch to a new network and keep their existing number nine years ago. However, we are now behind other countries who can already port numbers much quicker.
