Gentlemen have a fetish with the cutting edge. Whether automobiles, televisions, PDAs or wristwatches, men generally want the latest, most contemporary types available. In recent years, men's watches have satisfied this requirement for new looks, gizmos and components. The current trend in men's watches, however, is not toward advanced materials but toward simplicity. In the past ten years, men's dress watches expanded to encompass specialty metal composites such as magnesium, ceramic or tantalum. While these materials are still on offer, getting back to basics is the order of the day. New watches are being created with attention to the past and watch cases and bands feature steadfast favorites like stainless steel, yellow gold and rose-toned gold. There has been a hearkening back to classic styles in elegant wholesale watches and the general tone is understated. Antique designs are being brought back by many manufacturers, including desired designs from years ago. The classic skeleton watch is staging a resurgence. In a skeleton watch, men can study the hidden workings of their timepiece via a see-through case. The cogs and movement hold boundless fascination for many wearers and makes these revamped designs a must-have for gadget-loving men. The return to clean design has spilled over into men's everyday watches as well. Casual watches these days feature chic stainless steel bands or slim leather bands and pared down profiles. These watches can easily travel from the office to an evening with friends. They function well for social activities but are generally not sturdy enough for use in most sports. Sports watches have toned down in part, as well. Many hefty sports watches are now sold, especially watches with waterproof and water-resistant cases. The chunky design renders these watches impact-resistant and able to withstand the rigors of sports, from scuba diving to touch football. The thick, resilient plastic or rubber watchbands on most waterproof watches make them ideal for water exposure. These styles are not likely to alter much in the coming years simply because they perform so well for the intended purpose. There have been some innovations in sports watches. Stainless steel and titanium have been employed in more costly sports watches. These models offer an ideal combination of sporty looks, fashion and ruggedness. Sports-themed watches are apt to be a bit more avant garde than other sports watches and often feature unusual materials and designs.
