I used to smuggle into my parents' doors throughout the weekday when they were away, at their jobs or shopping or buying groceries or attending family. I slid my tiny body through the barely open door, running my narrowl hands over the smooth boxes of shoes, the slippery banners of ties, the worn fabric of my daddy's working shirts and the soft expensive cloth of my mother's suits, wholesale fashion jumbled together in this indiscriminate mess. I would lean up and wiggle my dad's shirts off their hangers with my narrow child's hands, pull them over my neck, swinging oversized and clear straight down to my scabbed knees, covered in useless pockets and strange logos. I pretended to be a adult, to be a fine woman in a fancy dress, to be a animal with a red nose. My mom had a robe, romantic and luxurious under my fingers it would slide off the hanger so that I couldn't resist the opportunity to slide it across my shoulders, a huge length of shimmer dragging behind me like a train. I pretended so often, those hours. My own clothing was commonplace, matching synthetics and patterns, childrens' clothes, nothing like the brilliant dressy exotic items my parents possessed. I stole their wholesale fashion for my own, dressing myself in their rags like cast-off skins, pretending with a child's passion. I was a admiral, a buccaneer, a lady; I was a working woman, a physical worker, a corporate lackey. My brain made no difference, all were equally exotic. It was just imagination, however. At the end of the day I had to hang everything back up, smoothing away creases with my small hands, and go back to being a child, dressed in nothing but wholesale fashion.
