For many, college is a time of being broke, eating cheap,
and unfavorable jobs. The rising costs
of tuition forces students across the country to take on part-time jobs to make
ends meet. Looking to pay the bills
while furthering your education?
Considering these opportunities that are no doubt available near you:
- Waiter/Waitress
- This seems to be the quintessential college job, working as a server in
a restaurant. Most college towns
have a plethora of eateries and with such a big turnover, plenty of spots
that need to be filled. In
addition, working busy nights (such as the weekends) gives servers the
opportunities to clean house when it comes to tips.
- Retail
- Another draw for college students, since many retail positions tend to
be social and even better, offer merchandise discounts. Apply at your favorite clothing stores
or specialty boutiques. Working retail also is ideal if you are looking
for only part-time work and many can provide set hours.
- Telemarketing
Services - Again, perhaps not the most desirable job, but most pay very
well. In addition, you pick the
hours and many companies are commission-based, so you have the potential
to make quite a bit.
- Professor
Assistant - Most colleges and universities offer positions as professor
assistants; if you have taken a certain class and did well in the class,
you may be eligible to be an assistant.
Duties typically include tutoring students, grading work, and
perhaps even subbing for the professor, if needed.
- Receptionist/Secretary
- Secretarial positions are ideal because they often require little to no
training and are relatively easy work.
Many small businesses and offices hire secretaries to take calls,
handle customers, complete filing, and various other office chores.
- Internships
- One of the best ways to work part-time is through an internship. While internships are usually thought of
as unpaid work experience, there are many internships that are paid. So you will not only be getting paid to
work, but gaining valuable work experience related to your chosen field of
study. Inquire with your school's
internship offices to find out about internships that are available
locally and nationally.
