Erection is the process of erecting or linking together the different shipping parts at the project site. Success of erection process more or less is dependent on the accuracy of the erection drawings and the precision in the fabricated steel. If steel is not fabricated according to the steel detail drawings or if the detail drawings are in error, erection is disrupted. There are other important factors which affect steel erection process and its success - erection of columns, plumb & bolt, welding, safety and decking. Erection of steel columns is the first and most important element of erection process. Column base plates are connected to the base using anchor bolts placed in the concrete as per the erection drawings. The location of the anchor bolts for a single column in the foundation must match precisely the pattern of bolt holes in the base plate. Plumb and bolt is the method of placing the steel assemblies in right locations, aligning them and briefly bolting them in place. Safety is an activity carried out by a separate team that installs cable handrails and required safety tools before welding team starts it work. A welding team or multiple of them are then responsible for final welding of all the assemblies in accordance with the provided steel erection drawings. Decking is the process of placing corrugated bent plate on the structural frame. Decking is a structural element resulted from bending of plate into a corrugated shape. The depth or height of the corrugations and the length or frequency of the corrugations influences the decking's strength greatly. Sometimes the erector sub-contracts or outsources design and detailing of the deck to CAD service providers.
