Especially for new parents, trying to help out a crying newborn child can be one of the most frustrating parts of the entire first year. You want desperately to help, but it's hard to come up with ways to make the baby feel better. The good news for parents who find themselves in this situation is that many parents before you have been there and they have come out of the process alive and with a healthy child. You can get there, too, even if you think that it seems like an impossible chore to behold given your current circumstances. One of the old, tried, and trusted ways to quiet a baby crying at night is to rock the baby slowly. That has worked for me in some circumstances, but it's typically not enough. What most people don't realize is that something in the baby's atmosphere is causing the problem. If you can do so, try to eliminate any noise or any undue movement that might be causing the baby's upheaval. You will want to check and see that there are no shadows, lights, or distinct sounds around that might be causing the baby to get upset. Many times, this will help, but there can be other times when rhyme and reason are thrown out the window. Time is usually the best way to make it go away, especially if you can wait out the lengthy periods with a measure of patience thrown on top. A baby crying at night might also need to be burped, which is something that you will need to do on occasion. The fact is that every baby is different and every crying situation will be a little bit different, too. In order to get to the bottom of things, you'll need to act on an individual basis.
