They Do Eventually Grow Up…

Babies fuss and babies cry; that's just what they do. Some fuss and cry more than others. Some seem completely inconsolable at times. Rest assured, however, that they do all eventually grow out of it. As a parent, all you have to do is be is patient and retain your sanity.

Dealing with a fussy baby is difficult, even under the best of circumstances. Add sleep deprivation and the nervousness that usually accompanies new parenthood and it can be overwhelming. When dealing with a fussy baby, the most important thing to do is to try not to get upset. When you get upset, the baby becomes more upset, creating a vicious cycle.

To effectively deal with a fussy baby, try to mimic the womb environment. Swaddling, shushing and gentle jostling all tend to have a calming effect on babies. Trying one or more of these techniques may be all that is needed when you're learning how to calm a fussy baby. Also, focus on the things over which you have some control, such as baby's comfort, and let go of those things over which you have no control, such as baby's mood. Ensure that your baby is not too hot or cold, is dry, well fed and burped. Once all the comfort needs are taken care of, it is ok to let the baby cry. In fact, this is how babies learn to comfort and entertain themselves. At first, you may not be clear on how to stop a baby from crying, but try not to unnecessarily deprive your baby of this valuable experience.

Many years ago when I was dealing with a particularly fussy baby, an elderly neighbor told me that the fussiest babies turn into the sweetest children. Well, she was right! That fussy baby grew to be the most delightful child and wonderful adult. Take heart - it will happen in your home, as well!
