How to Choose Computer Games for your Kids

If you are not familiar with computer games, how can you make sure your children are not choosing games that are excessively violent or are an ill fit with your family's values? Once the game is purchased and used, it certainly cannot be returned if you find it unsuitable, so researching before you buy is a wise move.

To start with, you can read the label on the packaging. Computer games are rated similarly to movies. By reading the rating, you'll be able to find out whether the game is suitable for the age group of your children, and the type of issues it deals with. The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) decides these ratings, but they don't pick up on certain themes such as ghostly, magical, or religious, which may be deemed inappropriate by some families.

In some cases you may be able to try out a free download for a certain number of days. This is a good option to use and the parents can actually check the game out before the child sees it. Word of mouth is another good way to find out what is in a game, while reading reviews in games magazines is also an option. Before buying, you'll also need to check that your computer has enough juice to run it.
