With 2009 over, I was left with one big headache to deal with. That whole Cash For Clunkers program was a great idea, assuming you actually had money to buy a new car. For someone like me, it was totally useless. According to my wife, all it stimulated was my temper. Trust me, I had a little free time and wrote a letter to my Congressman letting him know exactly what I thought about that program. I don't pretend to understand how auto donations work, but in my mind they should be helping charities, not multibillion dollar corporations.
I had a clunker sitting in my driveway all right, but I wasn't about to turn it in as part of a corporate car donation. I have one that's in good running order, so why on Earth should I fork over twenty grand on a new car just to save the skin of some guys working for Chrysler or General Motors and getting paid twice what I make? I would have been happy to leave it there until it completely rusted into a red heap, but my wife approached me about using it for a car donation instead. It's that whole "one man's junk is another's treasure" bit and in this case it made perfect sense. I could continue to sit on that wreck in the driveway until my wife finally loses it and I'm forced to pay a wrecker to come and haul it away. I could hold onto it until it actually is time to replace my current car, pay to have the wreck towed to the dealership and try to get them to shave a few bucks off the price of my new car, but chances are I won't even recoup the towing charges (if the dealer will even touch it). And in the meantime, my driveway is full of two tons of scrap metal with the only positive being that it annoys the neighbors, who have to look at it. Going the donate car route means I don't have to pay to get rid of the clunker, someone who needs the money benefits and I get the rest of my driveway back.
It all made sense and so I caved. My wife contacted donatecarusa.com (800-269-6814) and they quickly made arrangements to come and take the old wreck away for me. The cool thing was we got to pick from a long list of charities that benefit from auto donations, so I was able to ensure that my car donation was going towards a cause that I believed in.
