Volvo's Engine Cooling System 101
Written by Hailey Boss

All automobile engines, like those of Volvo, are vulnerable to breakdown. With continuous burning processes occurring inside the engine, the individual parts - gears, pinions, cams, belts, chains, and even the small screws - could fall prey to wearing out, and worse, disintegration. Some of the heat are are used for essential engine processes, but too much of it may prove to be catastrophic to the engine, and perhaps, disastrous to the owner.

An effective cooling system is thus, needed to control and properly dissipate the heat. One of the primary units of a typical engine's cooling system is the radiator fan, sometimes also called condenser fan or automotive fan. It is a rotating device whose primary function is to disperse heat. A Volvo radiator fan consists of a Volvo fan motor, a Volvo Fan Blade, and a Volvo fan shroud.

The fan motor powers the radiator fan and keeps it running, while the Volvo Fan Blade set is a group of curved propellers that project from the central hub and runs around it to create air. Most sedans and other cars use fans that have four blades. Trucks use fans that have as much as eleven. The fan shroud, on the other hand, is a plastic hood that protects the blades. It encloses the fan and directs the air through the core and prevents it from coming back and through the fan again. The main product is a concentrated cool air. Fan shrouds must be mounted properly, though, to ensure that they work well. The fan's durability may be determined by how it responds to vibration while the car is running on the road.

The parts of the Volvo radiator fan are most often made of tough plastic. Because of its significant role in controlling temperature in the engine's cooling system, radiator fans must maintained and checked up regularly. Replacement of these fans should be made immediately, even if only a small crack appears on of the blades. If not given due attention, heat would readily accumulate in the engine and cause it to finally break down.
