Toyota Gives 4Runner Fans a Choice of Engines

The 2010 Toyota 4Runner fulfills both on-road and off-road power demands with a choice of two engine options. A 2.7L I4 delivers ample power with respectable fuel efficiency, while a beefier 4.0L V6 will help blaze a trail and act more like a fuel camel. Both engines require only 87 octane gas, which helps with today's unpredictable gas prices.

For those who wish to remain primarily in town, the 2.7L I4 is plentiful and versatile. This engine has a 94.0 mm bore, a 95.0 mm stroke, and a 10.4:1 compression ratio. To handle the 16 valves, it features double overhead cams. The Variable Valve Timing and the multi-port injection system help provide a responsive powertrain which maximizes fuel efficiency. One can expect a 4Runner equipped with the 2.7L I4 to average up to 20 mpg. The maximum horsepower of 157 horsepower is realized at 5200 rpm, while 178 lb-ft of maximum torque occurs at 3800 rpm.

A 4.0L V6 handles the needs of those who wish to venture off the beaten path or tow a boat. The 94.0 mm bore, 95.0 mm stroke, and 10.4:1 compression ratio equate to raw power. At 5600 rpm, this engine delivers 270 horsepower and 278 of lb-ft peak torque is attained at 4400 rpm. And just like the 4-cylinder option, the 4.0L V6 features double overhead cams for powering 24 valves, Variable Valve Timing and a multi-port injection system. Plus, a 4Runner with the 4.0L V6 can reasonably average up to 19 mpg.

Finally, both engines feature direct coil ignition, which dedicates an ignition coil to each spark plug. This allows for greater performance and efficiency. So, whether opting for a 2.7L I4 or 4.0L V6 both engines deliver the reliability and value that Toyota owners come to know over the years.
