Motor - Insuring Kit Cars
Written by David Collins

Kit cars are vehicles built up from different parts of a car which have been brought separately.

Enthusiasts invest a lot of time and money in such a hobby. The process of purchasing separate, specialist parts of classic and vintage cars and then restoring and assembling them back into their original form can be a rewarding experience.

One of the features of such vehicles is that they are lightweight, and are built deliberately in order to enhance the driving experience by allowing for greater acceleration.

A common characteristic of kit car design is the enhancement of the vehicle by equipping them with larger engines, thus increasing the power-to-weight ratio in a smaller car.

But finding cheap car insurance for such vehicles can be difficult, depending on the amount of work you've done on the car.

Small, lightweight cars with large engines are considered ‘easy to steal' by the car insurance industry as a whole due to the common trait of fitting larger, more powerful engines into smaller frames - which could raise the risk of theft and joyriding.

Another feature, or lack of, which could affect the insurance policies of enthusiasts, is the lack of modern safety features - such as airbags and high-impact crumple zones - in some vehicles.

But enthusiasts could save themselves money on their policies by having a clean driving licence, as well as taking extra steps when it comes to security features on their vehicle:

  • Invest in an immobiliser in order to protect against attempted theft
  • Try and limit the size of the engine you want to fit into the frame. A larger, more powerful engine could make your vehicle attractive to thieves.
  • When searching for a car insurance quote, be honest about the specifications of your vehicle in order to avoid issues if you need to make a claim.
  • When storing your vehicle of an evening, try and make use of a garage in order to store your kit car. Simple steps such as this will help reduce the risk of theft as well as help bring your insurance premiums down.
