What is reverse engineering?

Often the word reverse creates confusion about general concept of engineering.

Basically, it is minute analyzing for making a solid model or 2-D drawing to aid in re-manufacturing. In dictionary, it is a process of studying or analyzing the principles of a device, object or system to further document its structure, function and operation.

The wide range of usages of such application has established the name like ‘Applications 3d'. For the common man, it is re-engineering of the old or obsolete machine in an electronic format prior to rebuild, repair or upgrade. There is a misconception that reverse engineering is all about bringing an old part back to life. Though, it builds a launch pad as well for numerous other technical advancements. For instance, development of 3D laser scanning could be possible on the ground of reverse engineering.

Probably, most of us would be aware about the 3D laser scanner. It captures the real world object and environment in intensive way and demonstrates it in 3Dimensional virtual mode. Extensive wide variety of application of 3D laser scanners includes facility management, architecture, heritage restoration, procecess/power/piping, construction, accident reconstruction, surveying, forensics, film/movies, and game development. In practically way, today every industry needs super accurate and high speed 3D reality data generation.

Point clouds use to produce by 3D scanners but can not be directly used. So, we need a process called ‘modeling'. It is a converting process of point cloud into usable 3D model. Surface modeling is also an integral part of reverse engineering. It is a mathematical technique. Experts use this technique in demonstrating solid appearing of the object. It is a complex method but not as complex as wireframe modeling and not as sophisticated as solid modeling. 3D animated games and CAD (computer aided design) are favorite areas of surface modeling. Now, let's move towards reverse engineering and have a glimpse of its different stages:

  • At first, engineers study & recognize the product and its components, wherever reverse engineering can be used. So, such stage is also known as prescreening potential components.
  • Disassembling or observation of informative documents is the next stage after formal introduction. It is the most time consuming stage. It is obvious because eventually under this process, we accumulate all the instructions and technical data about the working of the product.
  • Now, engineers verify the perfection in designing work by repeated testing.
  • Then, comes the final stage and new products use to introduce in the market.

Thus, reverse engineering is the master process of producing completely new product with the similar function. Interoperability is the key factor behind reverse engineering. Besides that, it uses into recovering lost documentation. It has great importance into product analysis as well.
