There are news stories almost every day about car accidents, chances are if you drive to work in the mornings then you'll have seen your share of accidents on the roads which can lead to serious congestion and a good 20 minutes or more added to your commute time. Our cars are tasked with transporting us safely to our destination and in years gone by there have not been that much other than a seat belt to protect us, and even then they didn't become mandatory for many years after the introduction of the motor car. This is why today we have more safety features built into our cars than we realise, cars released in the past year or so have such sophisticated technology buried inside that driving is a much more assured and secure activity these days, Anti-lock Brakes Brakes locking up used to be a big problem, especially in poor weather conditions. Brakes now sense when they are entering locking conditions and so you will often hear a deep sound when braking which could cause concern in snowy and icy conditions, there is no cause for alarm as this is the ABS kicking in and doing its job. Airbags Airbags have been around for some time now too, although the first airbags used to only pop out of the steering wheel to cushion the driver's face there are now many more hidden away in our cars. Most cars with airbags now have them strategically placed all round the driver and passengers. Airbags are now situated to the side of the windshield, between the driver and the door, in head rests, even in the pillars between front and back passengers. These airbags protect all passengers of the car now. Better Tyres Modern tyres are now made from high-traction material and in many cases can withstand a puncture for a long period of time. These tyres known as "run flats" have a reinforced sidewall so that even as the tyres lose pressure from a puncture they are still safe to drive on (albeit at a lowered speed) until you can safely change the tyre. As with all tyres you should make sure they have sufficient tread and are inflated to correct levels before any journey. Parking Cameras/sensors Some cars now have sensors or even cameras built into their bumpers to help identify how close they are to the vehicles or obstructions behind them when parking. A lot of people have crunched into a bollard or someone else's car in the past and these systems can emit a beep or show how close you are to warn you of a potential bump.
