The first thing that you have to do is to give time to your camera to adapt itself to the environment. This is vital and it goes two ways. Like for example, if you are going out of your warm house or if you have just come back from shooting out in the cold. You will have to give time to your camera to adjust itself with the changes in the temperatures. Going either ways will fog up the lens and the viewfinder. Put your lens cap on when you are moving out or getting in, this will give a lot of time to your camera to acclimate itself.

The amount of time taken really depends on the temperature differences. The bigger the difference in the temperature the more time you will have to allot. Around 15 minutes is good enough but you might require more or less depending on the humidity in the environment. To do this successfully, you could also transfer your camera back in the bag and let it acclimate. Now this might take a little longer but it will help you avoid the problems of condensation.

The next thing on the cards is to protect your batteries. You have to remember that apart from the sensor and the lens of the camera, the batteries are its real lifeline. The digital cameras function solely on the batteries. The problem is that the cold will sap the batteries even if they are not loaded in the camera. This is another aspect of basic digital photography. You should always carry the spare batteries in the pockets of your pants so that they remain warm. The point is that the warmer the battery the better it is going to perform. Even if you camera shows that the battery is dead, you can try warming the batteries in the pocket. This will bring them back into the life immediately. If you can rotate the batteries in this manner then you will be able to shoot for a longer time!

Last and the most important part of the basic digital photography are your hands. Do not forget to protect your hands. Your camera will be able to adjust well in the temperature outside but always remember that your hands wouldn't if you hold the camera for a long time then you will experience frost bites on the fingers. If you expose your fingers for a more than a few minutes in the sub freezing temperatures your fingers will go numb and will not respond! Always wear gloves when you are shooting in the cold weather! This will keep the wind out and keep your hands warm.
