There are many different types and forms of paint though the most general form is a liquid. Paint is applied to a surface in order to change the color or protect the surface. It also can be used for decoration. The very earliest paints used for cave drawings were made of yellow ochre, charcoal, hematite and manganese oxide. The vibrancy and brilliance of these colors are still strong even after thousands of years. It is the pigments in the paint that provide the color and the pigments can be in the form of dyes or as small granules that not only provide color but also texture. There are two types of paint pigments, one made from natural compounds and the other are synthetic pigments. Silica, calcium carbonate, talc, mica and clay are all natural pigments. Synthetic pigments are those that are engineered from other compounds some common synthetic pigments include calcines clay, precipitated calcium carbonate, blanc fix and synthetic silica. There are also many pigments that are used as protection against ultraviolet light such as titanium dioxide, red iron oxide and phthalo blue. Some very fun paint is those that change color when exposed to heat. These thermochromic paints will change color when exposed to UV light. Some car manufacturers are looking into using electrochrmic paint. This paint changes color when an electric current runs through it. Fine art uses different types of paints then those found on walls, houses and cars. Most fine art paints are oil based with the most common oil being linseed oil. There are also many water based paints such as water colors and acrylics but these did not become popular until the 20th century. Other paints that are used in art include milk derived paints, gouache, a water based paint used during the Middle Ages for manuscript illustrations, egg tempera which is a mixture of oil and egg yolks and paints that were made by grinding up semiprecious stones and then mixing these powders with egg white or gum Arabic. Paints can be applied as liquids, gases or solids and the application of paint will depend on the type of result you are looking for. Solid paints are in the form of fine powders and when the dusted surface is heated the powder melts and sticks to the painted object or surface. Spray paint is a gaseous form of paint and this is generally used for uniform color, even distribution, painting of small areas, and the ability to not touch the object, so no brush marks. There are also some paints which must have their molecules aligned properly and spraying it on is the only way to achieve this. When painting with a liquid you can use brushes, rollers and other painting tools. Rollers are excellent for hard to reach places as they can be attached to very long handles and come in many different sizes. When using a roller you will need to finish the edges using a brush. Besides the above methods you can flip paint onto a surface or object, dip it or drip the paint on. Article Source: http://www.ArticleBlast.com |
