The Basics Of Oil Painting

When you want to add new artwork to your home, you may want to consider painting your own oil painting. These paintings can be vibrant, detailed, and multi-layered. Oil painting does require some preparation. Before starting, one must first buy several necessary items. The most necessary include canvases, pencils, oil paints, oil medium, brushes, and a palette. Items that are beneficial yet not completely necessary include a painting easel, an apron, jars, cleaning solution, drawing paper, rags, and newspapers or old sheets for covering up furniture or carpets. To start, it is often best to first draw the desired scene on drawing paper so as to figure out how the painting will look. Before transferring the drawing to the canvas, sometimes artists will apply a light wash of paint (preferably a light beige) over the canvas to give the painting more depth. Once this is completely dry, the artist can lightly pencil in their drawing until it looks the way that they want it to. Once all the markings are made, painting can begin. To start, it is usually best to paint the most basic colors in first. Oil painting requires many layers of colors, unlike watercolor and other paint mediums. A painting of a brown building may start as a basic brown, but then the artist can "build" more colors on top of it. When painting details, it is best not to think too much about how the whole painting looks. With oil paintings, an artist can bring out all of the colors in objects that are not obvious upon first glance. For instance, a brown barn may actually require many different paint colors, including reds, blues, yellows, and greens. To not get too stressed, it is best to try to relax and paint from the heart. While detail helps, oil paint is a forgiving medium that allows for some mistakes. When you are focusing a lot on one particular area, step back a bit and see how it looks. It may look better than you thought.
