London's Theatreland is always a big draw, pulling in both locals and tourists alike six days a week with all kinds of shows playing to enthralled audiences. But trying to choose between the dozens of possible shows you could go and see isn't always easy. There is something for everyone, from the big headlining shows that everyone wants to see, right down to the small plays in the smaller theatres that can also give you a great night out. The first step in making your decision is to work out what day you will be visiting London. You can then check to see what's showing on that date and make a shortlist of possibilities that you'd be happy to see. If it is for a special occasion - a birthday or anniversary present perhaps - then you should book your tickets well in advance to make sure you don't miss out. Booking in advance is generally more expensive, but while you can get a great bargain by leaving it until the last minute (sometimes until the day itself in some cases) you need to be careful. It generally means you have to queue for last minute availability and the seats you get are not guaranteed to be the best ones in the house. Think about whether you want to see a play or a musical as well. There are plenty of options available for either type and, while the big name musicals will always draw in packed houses, they are often booked up many months in advance, so you need to be prepared if it's a popular show that you wish to see. You'll also find that the shows that get booked up first tend to be those featuring famous players in the main roles. The smaller shows with few well known actors in them will usually be much easier to get into. Some of these are also well worth seeing, with the intimacy of the smaller venue helping you to lose yourself in the performances and story. There are also plenty of hotels in London that you can book into for a night of luxury after the show is over. This is far better than taking a long journey home and it means you can wake up refreshed to a nice breakfast and then spend the next day wandering around and enjoying the sights of the city as well. You could also think about booking a weekend away which includes the show tickets and hotel room all in one price. This saves you trying to arrange something yourself and can sometimes eliminate the need for a lot of research. You still need to make sure you choose the best show for you though, and the quality and diversity of what's on offer in London's Theatreland means you will always be spoilt for choice.
