Is your child always jumping in front of the camera on your family vacations? Does he or she have a winning smile and love to be the centre of attention? If so, modeling classes might be an interesting hobby for them to explore - and even turn into a career! So how do you get started? Here are five tips to get your child prepared to be a young model.

Have their picture taken: Anytime you're spending time as a family, whether it's going for a walk in the park or lounging on the beach - there's always photo opportunities around. Be sure to bring along the camera and start snapping! Once you've chosen your favourite shots, print them as 8x10 portraits and use them as your child's first headshots.

Research online: Check out the child modeling agencies in your area. John Robert Powers is a great example of a upstanding child modeling agency. Look at the staff credentials, company info, modelling classes, educational programs available, etc. It's important to choose a child modeling agency that is reputable, professional and have the child's best interest at heart.

Make the 1st step: Contact the modeling agencies that you are interested in and write up a cover letter that states all of your child's unique characteristics and charms. If your child has been involved in modeling in the past or volunteer activities be sure to mention that as well. Attach one of your child's headshots to complete the package.

Set up a meeting: After a modeling agency receives your child's cover letter they should be calling you to schedule a meeting. Before the meeting, write down any questions that you may have about the modeling process, modeling classes, costs, etc. Make sure your child is also dressed appropriately and clean cut. You may also want to spend some time with your child making sure he/she is comfortable answering and asking any questions.

Follow up: Take an initiative and follow up your meeting with a thank you phone call. You may be asked to have a follow up meeting or schedule an interview for your child. If you feel comfortable with the agency and your child is interested in becoming a child model, you're on the right track!
