Headphone Safety

Supra aural headphones are designed so that the earpiece sits directly on top of the ear. With circumaural headphones, the earpiece actually encloses the whole ear, rather than sitting on top of it. These are used mainly in recording studios and by audio fanatics. With any headphone, it is desirable that they fit the user comfortably, so try them on before you buy.

There are other dangers associated with wearing headphones apart from loss of hearing. Being isolated - even only partly - from outside sound poses the risk of not hearing warning sounds such as a car horn. And the user is also frequently only partly aware of the environment. This makes it more likely that you would not notice - or would ignore - a bump in the crowd that could be someone picking your pocket or otherwise doing something intended to harm you.

It is considered that the in-ear canal phone is the safest to use as far as hearing loss is concerned, especially in a noisy environment, as the user can drown out other noise. But the ear bud that allows the hearer to also hear outside noise is the best to use where personal safety is concerned.
