All you need to know about the Cavern Club |

Jazz was the staple diet of the original Cavern Club when it opened its doors in Liverpool (not far from Manchester) back in 1957. Named after the Parisian jazz club Le Caveau, it hosted many of the biggest names in UK jazz but as music changed, so did the Cavern Club. Skiffle bands became the vogue in the late 1950s and it was with The Quarrymen Skiffle Group that both John Lennon and Paul McCartney made their respective debuts in 1957 and 1958.
Of course, it was with The Beatles that the pair helped to make the club the most famous venue in the world, with their famed lunchtime sessions - the first taking place in 1961 - becoming the stuff of legend.
Even when The Beatles rocked to a whole new stratosphere of stardom, the Cavern remained synonymous with the four-piece - despite hosting their final Fab Four gig in 1963. It was at the Cavern that drummer Pete Best played his last set with The Beatles and, one week later at the same venue, Ringo Starr made his televised debut to chants of ‘We want Pete' in the background.
But changing trends cost the Cavern dearly and it was shut down in February 1966. Although the club reopened just five months later, its doors did close again in 1973. While manager Roy Adams went on to open a second Cavern Club at a different venue, the original had to be demolished on safety grounds in 1983. With its fame fully acknowledged, however, some 15,000 bricks from the old Cavern Club were saved and used to reconstruct a brand-new club on the same site.
Reopened for the second time in 1984, the modern-day Cavern Club now stands on its original site and, once again, hums to the sound of the coolest bands around.
