A Fantastic Theatre Break in Birmingham

If you're hankering after a theatre break in the UK, sometimes it seems like the only option is London. Being famous for the world-renowned West End theatre district - the UK equivalent to Broadway in New York - it's understandable that London is so popular for theatre fans, but it isn't necessarily the only choice.

Plenty of other areas across Great Britain are heavily into the performing arts, from various big cities to smaller towns. One such city is the bustling arts hub of Birmingham, a sprawling metropolis that proudly houses a variety of excellent theatres, as well as many talented actors.

On top of the four main theatres in Birmingham are many smaller establishments that are perfect for connoisseurs of the independent theatre scene, which thrives in this enigmatic city. For example, the exceptional Banner Theatre is a community theatre founded over 30 years ago which works to create topical productions based on the experiences of communities in the area.

However, for those who love nothing more than an extravagant trip to a big theatre, Birmingham has plenty to offer. There are many large theatres in the city, including the Alexandra Theatre, known locally as the Alex, which is over 100 years old and is placed on Station Street. This theatre is often used for touring West End shows, meaning it enjoys a high standard of quality performances year round. The Rep - or Birmingham Repertory Theatre - enjoys a frequently changing catalogue of shows that it often swaps with the West Yorkshire Playhouse, particularly around Christmas time when pantomimes abound.

The Rep's older yet no less popular counterpart, The Old Rep, seats only several hundred people but remains a firm favourite with Birmingham locals. Due to its size, The Old Rep is popular with amateur companies, as well as small scale travelling troupes. Built in 1913, The Old Rep is worth a visit for its beautiful interior alone and makes a gorgeous addition to a theatre trip.

Completing the set of Birmingham's best known theatres is the Birmingham Hippodrome, the city's largest theatre and one that hosts some of the biggest West End productions, as well as opera and ballet - meaning it is one of the most versatile stages too.

Whatever type of theatre takes your fancy, a stay in Birmingham city centre hotels will certainly be enlivened by a trip or two to one of the city's fabulous theatres.
