Something About American Women Artists

In the 18th and 19th century American Women Artist did not get fare recognition due to male domination. It was in the beginning of the 20th century that American women began to claim their right as artists. Mary Cassatt was one among the few who gained recognition as an artist in the 19th century.

Mary was from a wealthy family and learned about painting in Europe. She end her studies and learned about old masters on her own because the slow pace of instructions and the attitude of the male students and teachers. Despite her father's objection she moved to Paris. In 1868 one of her painting ‘Mandoline Player' was accepted for the first time.

In the 1860's American Women Artists who were well off went to Europe for instruction and inspiration as Europe had more sophisticated system of training in comparison to America.

Women learned from masters in Paris and enrolled themselves for private instructions which gave them opportunity develop and master their art under the guidance of their masters.

American Women artist slowly and gradually took their place in the male dominated art world and won a good share of medals and trophies. However in spite of that the discrimination remained.

By the 20th century women began to assert themselves and their art.To name a few American women like Kate Freeman Clark. Marion Kavanaugh Wachtel, Lilian Amthilde Genth, Phyllis Wiener, Marion Powers and many more contribute in changing the stature of women in the art world.
