The art of printing is believed to have originated in China thousands of years ago, however the first recorded history credits it to Caxton followed by Guttenberg. Victorian times heralded the introduction of heavy monster presses which culminated in the Albion Press and later printing machines that were heavily influenced by gothic Victorian ideas. This resulted in Engineers designing printing machines for artists not artists designing printing presses for themselves. For a long time artists have been trapped into only being able to print at institutions. Rarely were artists ever able to acquire the best from printing machines. surprisingly, the artwork wasn't the focus, it was the printing machines themselves. That's where we were until Dave Gunning came along and designed an excellent fabricated machine which is totally ‘hands on' during the late eighties. Although they were an immediate success inside the printing industry, Dave has spent the past 20 years perfecting the machines. Daves on-going adventure is to educate, so the art of etching and printing never dies. Dave has steel bashing in his roots, he was born in to a long line of pedigree steelworkers in Biston 55 years ago. Daves portfolio is pretty impressive too, he can boast pieces of his artwork displayed in Westminster Palce, The Royal Collection and the National Museum of Wales. Unlike any other printing machines in the marketplace, every press is handmade in Ironbridge, Shropshire. They print etchings, collographs, lino, bromoil and woodcuts. Printing results are superb and the main feature about Dave's product is the fact that all machines are portable and give a lifetime guarantee.Dave Gunnings Gunningarts printing presses can be found in schools, colleges and artists studios. In fact he has produced over 1000 of these superior printing machines. One even takes its pride of place within the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, an accolade any artist or designer would be proud of. ‘I saw a press in a museum in Paris that was Picasso's, I never dreamed I would have a press I hade made in a museum as an exhibit!'
