What The Common Movie Ratings Mean
Article Submitted by: Kevin Lynch

The large movie studios have long been giving movies a rating to let persons know how appropriate or improper the movie may be for particular spectators. Normally it is to shelter children from exceptionally violent or sexual scenes or it may even be as uncomplicated as smoking or bad language. The concern is whose opinion rates the motion picture. Many people will disagree with a rating and there have even been copyright cases where a company intentionally deleted scenes that were deemed inappropriate, even when a movie was rated PG or PG-13.

Since movies are all so diverse it is very grueling to preserve a standard that holds accurate for every single picture. And then there are the different things that people find provocative. One person may consider that a lone nude scene depicting potential sexuality is disgusting, while another may consider violence or a suicide by gunshot scene to be more disgusting. Various people have diverse concerns when it comes to what they believe is appropriate to see at a movie.

The rating system for movies however is based upon theme and content. Parents and individuals need to take accountability themselves and just use the rating system as a guide as one should never rely on the rating system completely.

A G rating means that the motion picture has been deemed appropriate for general audiences. It may or may not be a kid's motion picture but it will not contain sexual scenes, swearing, drug or alcohol use, cigarette smoking or violence.

PG suggests parental guidance. There may be transitory moments of the aforementioned scenes but not any are too much. Parents are just cautioned that the scenes may exist. PG-13 is a stronger parental guidance caveat. This is typically a movie that is not enough to necessitate an R rating but proper for a PG-13 either. These movies are meant for children over the age of 13 with parental supervision. There is maybe nudity or implied sexuality and/or violence.

No one under the age of 17 will be allowed into an R rated movie except they are accompanied by an adult guardian or parent. There is likely sexual scenes, drug abuse or violence. Parents are encouraged to watch these movies first before deciding to allow a child or young person to watch it.

The most recent rating is an NC-17. No one under the age of 17 is admitted into the movie theater to see these movies. These movies are not often pornographic but they do have adult content, either sexual or even violence beyond what is fitting for everybody less than the age of 17.

As with each parenting decisions, a parent must take their own responsibility for what movie is proper for their own child. It is not sensible to rely on the ratings system but only to use it as a wide-ranging guide.
