The Queen of Pop Has 4 Minutes to Save the World

Madonna Louise Ciccone Ritchie, better known as simply Madonna, is considered to be a true superstar. She swiftly conquered her field of pop music, succeeded in Hollywood, produced a best-selling book, and has a huge international presence. These ingredients, when mixed together, generally produce a superstar. The question, as always, is how long will her superstardom last? Stars climb and fall all the time, but it is different for each case. In regard to Madonna, her appeal lays in her raw and intriguing display of sexuality, which most definitely correlates with youth. As she is nearing age 50, how much longer can she keep this up?

Earlier this year, Madonna signed an unprecedented 10 year, $120 million deal with concert promoters Live Nation. The striking aspect of the deal isn't the money, but rather the length of the contract. It would not be shocking to suppose that most people don't want to see a 60-year-old Madonna in a tight outfit carousing around a pole on stage. Granted, Botox injections can go a long way, but 60 is still 60, and unfortunately, mathematicians still haven't discovered a way to wipe off actual years from one's age.

Perhaps it is telling that Madonna has shifted her focus from sexuality to humanitarianism. Sort of. Her brand new single, originally titled 4 Minutes to Save the World, features Madonna and superstar-in-training Justin Timberlake pleading with listeners: "Time is waiting, we only got four minutes to save the world, no hesitating..." It seems like Madonna is handing in her high heels for some comfortable New Balance sneakers. Considering her age, as mentioned before, this is probably an intelligent direction for her. Artists like Barbara Streisand and Bette Midler can still sell out stadiums, but both for reasons extremely far from sexuality.

If only Madonna were truly heading in that direction. While the single of 4 Minutes doubles as a dance floor favorite as well as preaching to the world, it does not correlate with her new album cover, titled Hard Candy. In it, Madonna is wearing a tight corset with her legs spread open, while offering a sexually suggestive facial expression. Age notwithstanding, she does look good. If she didn't, she probably wouldn't pose like that (suggestions of heavy airbrushing in some tabloids also notwithstanding). But shouldn't she start thinking of the future? Surely she doesn't expect to swoon young males by age 58.

If Madonna would take a more demure approach at this current time, it would allow for a smoother transition from unabashed sexuality to refined elegance. By the looks of it, the Queen of Pop intends to ride out her career on the wheels of every erotic bone left in her body. Although she gives us 4 minutes to save the world, I give her 10 years to save her image.
