Angie is currently starring in the hit NYC show, "This is Burlesque".BUST Magazine says "make sure you hit this up next time you're in town. In fact, I reccommend planning your trip around it." We caught up with Ms. Pontani a few weeks ago for Six Question. 1. Club DD: "This is Burlesque", has been a huge hit. We understand they've added a second show on Friday nights. That's excellent. But many people are still unclear what exactly "is burlesque". How would you describe it? Angie: Burlesque is one of America's oldest forms of theatrical entertainment. Most remembered and revived for the classic strip-tease, it incorporates satire, comedy & most importantly over the top glamour into entertainment. These days the term burlesque can be used to describe anything from the Pussycat Dolls to performance art, and I think that is great. To me, burlesque is all about gorgeous girls dancing in outrageous costumes and bringing a smile to the audiences faces, either with a spinning kick line or a tantalizing boa trick or fan dance. It's really all about showbiz and tease, which is infinitely more gratifying then the full monty in my opinion.
2. Club DD: How did the World Famous Pontani Sisters come to be? Angie: The Pontani Sisters were literally born dancing on the boardwalk in Coney Island. I had been performing in a burlesque show in Manhattan almost direct from high school. When that show closed, I didn't know what to do with myself, so I turned my curtains into costumes, made three headdresses out of my plastic fruit kitchen table centerpiece, threw them on my sisters and we went to Coney Island and danced on the boardwalk, within a month we were performing 4 nights a week throughout NYC. it was really kismet.
3. Club DD: When the other little girls played with Barbie, You: Angie: Tried to fit in her clothes.
4. Club DD: Miss Exotic World 2008. Pretty sweet! What kind of perks come with that? Angie: Just saying I'm Miss Exotic World is perk enough for me, it's a real honor to be associated with the Burlesque Hall of Fame at this level. In terms of additional perks, I did get free drinks and an emergency row aisle seat on the flight home. Plus I think now that I am Miss Exotic World, I'm a shoe in to date Derek Jeter.
5. Club DD: Born in NJ but now based out of Brooklyn. How's life in BK? What do you do for Fun?
Angie: I love life in the BK, I don't think I could live anywhere else. I just got home from eating post show grilled cheese sandwiches with my sisters at one of our favorite local bars Barrette and tomorrow morning I'll enjoy my coffee in my yard while I water my tomato plants and talk Met's baseball with my neighbor Tony. Then I'll decide which sisters house I want to walk to for lunch and possibly hit the beach for a little afternoon tanning. It's a good life here in Brooklyn. 6.Club DD: The three songs on the top of your playlist are: Angie: These are literally my three top played songs.
Stayin' Alive - The Bee Gees
Stargazer - Frank Sinatra
Cyclone - Baby Bash
