Dylan Moran, whilst considered a genius by many, is by no means an innovative stand-up comedy writer - the material he was working with was extremely basic, almost completely boiling down to stereotypical humour. The differences between men and women, the rich and the poor, Irish people and English people, Irish people and German people, Irish people and Australian people - etc etc etc.

So then why was I laughing so much?

The answer is because when it comes to Dylan Moran, it's not what he says - but how he says it.

If you've seen his show Black Books (and if you haven't I suggest that you do) then you should know what I'm talking about. There's nothing particularly brilliant about the writing of Black Books, but it's Moran's (as well as that delightful Bill Bailey) timing and delivery that can turn what would be a mildly amusing script into an instant classic.

And thus is the case with his stand-up. Moving from topic to topic, between drags of his cigarette and gulps of wine, Moran delivers some great lines - seemingly out of nowhere and during what would usually be the most cliched material.

Where Moran fell short was in his ability to really engage the audience. This is almost certainly due to the ridiculously large venues his popularity forces him to perform in. One can assume that if the same dialogue had been delivered in a smaller room the gig would have been infinitely better.

As for the material itself, the show wasn't quite a laugh a minute. While, as I said, Moran has the ability to pull a moment of genius from what would be dull and lifeless material for any other comedian - it is when waiting for these moments that one could become restless.

But whether you like him or not - Moran has so many fans here and abroad it's a certainty that his dead-pan, chain-smoking, mildly offensive style of humour will be enjoyed wherever he performs.
