Owning and raising a Yorkie is a priceless experience. But like any dog breed, you need to know what to expect when getting a Yorkie. This article give you some enlightenment on this amazing dog breed.

Yorkies are very popular pets. In fact, they are the second most popular dog breed in the U.S., only surpassed by the Labrador Retriever. If you know someone who owns a Yorkie, there's a good chance that they don't own just one.

Yorkie Origin - The Yorkie originated in Yorkshire, which is a rugged area in the northern area of England. The Yorkie was bred through different dog breeds by the locals for the use of exterminating vermin, such as mice, and rats. Over time the Yorkie breed became increasingly popular as pets, with women carry them around.

Physical Characteristics - Yorkies are a small dog breed, with lots of hair (usually a brown, black, and tan coat). However, there hair is very thin, and they do not have an undercoat. This makes them ideal house pets, as they don't have dandruff or shed much like other dog breeds.

Yorkie Temperament - The Yorkie is very intelligent dog, usually learning simple commands, such as sit, stay, or fetch in just a few training sessions. But oftentimes Yorkies will act bigger than they are, barking at larger dogs. This makes them good watch dogs, as they will most likely bark loudly when a visitor comes to the door. Yorkies are also loyal and loving animals, but enjoy their own privacy at certain times.

Yorkie Health Issues - Some common health problems associated with Yorkies are tooth decay, sensitive skin, bronchitis, and a soft digestive system. Being as small as Yorkies are can cause issues when having surgery or anesthesia also.

Lifespan - Most Yorkies live a long life, anywhere from 10-15 years. Keeping your Yorkie exercised, well-fed, and generally happy can lead to a long, healthy life.

Yorkies are great dogs, and make the perfect companion for any animal lover.
